Another thing I like about his character is how he grows throughout the series. He just happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time, and now he’s a spirit detective because of it. He’s always getting in trouble everywhere he goes, and he’s usually doing things for his own benefit (prior the thing he did that started this whole chain events). Yusuke, however, does not fit into that category. Most shonen protagonists are usually seen as heroic and selfless, albiet a bit simple minded. The thing I quite like about Yusuke is that he’s not your typical protaginist. I’ll be going into each character one at a time, starting with our main protagonist, Yusuke Urameshi. Luckily, the cast of Yu Yu Hakusho is very likable and interesting.

Now what would a good long-runner be without a great and well-rounded cast of characters? Nothing, because if you’re going to follow these characters around for such a long time, you’re going to need to be able to care about what happens to them on their journey. So overall, Yu Yu Hakusho‘s story is one that still withstands the test of time, even 23 years after it came out. The Chapter Black Saga offered some great character development for Yusuke and the rest of the characters as we got to learn more about them, and the Three Kings arc is a really good (albiet, a bit rushed) end to the long journey. The Dark Tournament arc has some of the most memorable and creative fights in the entire series, along with a moment that legitimately made me kinda sad.

The Spirit Detective arc is a really good starting point for the series and it does an excellent job at selling it’s premise and concepts to the audience, as well as cutting out some fluff from the manga and getting to the meat of the story a little quicker. Each of the story arcs are very well put together, and they each have atributes that make them stand out from each other. So we know that the pacing is good, but how does the actual story hold up? Very well, if I say so myself. The show uses all 112 of it’s episodes to their fullest and doesn’t waste any time. In most long running shonen anime, you have to deal with painfully slow pacing and constant filler arcs due to the lack of manga material to adapt, but with Yu Yu Hakusho, everything is paced perfectly and there are no fillers at all. One of my favorite things about Yu Yu Hakusho is how it’s story is paced. Together, they help solve a variety of supernatural cases that are going on in the human world. Assisting him, we have long-time rival Kazuma Kuwabara, the demon fox Yoko Kurama, and the former criminal Hiei. After completing these trials, he is then assigned by Koenma, the son of Spirit World’s ruler, to become a Spirit Detective, a detective who must solve demon cases in the human world. She tells Yusuke that because Spirit World was not prepared for his arrival, he has another chance of living, but he must go through a series of trials before returning to his original body. Shortly after his death, he then encounters Botan, who is this show’s version of the Grim Reaper. However, just because he’s dead, that doesn’t mean our journey is over for our protaginist. The problem? The car ended up killing him. Not wanting the child to get hurt, Yusuke jumps out of the way and saves the child’s life.

One day, while skipping school, he sees a young child going out into the streets to get a ball.

The story of Yu Yu Hakusho revolves around our main protagonist, Yusuke Urameshi, a juvenile delinquent who is always getting into trouble. Grab your huge bag of candy, practice doing your Spirit Gun and take a seat, because this review will be one heck of a treat! Also, thanks to staff member SoundOfAzure (you may know him as Alex) for providing me with the nice HD screencaps used in this review. Happy Halloween, everybody! Since this is the day where supernatural stuff is very prevalent, I thought I’d look at my personal favorite supernatural action anime, as well as my favorite show from the Cartoon Network Toonami block, Yu Yu Hakusho.
